Improving Adhesion to TPO with Waterborne Acrylic Resins

As the coatings industry converts more to waterborne technologies, strategies once used to improve adhesion are no longer an option. For example, low surface energy substrates such as thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membranes or ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM) membranes are notoriously difficult to adhere to. This is due to the lack of chemical functionality on the membrane surface to improve adhesion. This is particularly true on unweathered substrates.

EPS® 2252

is a high solids acrylic emulsion designed to adhere to low energy substrates commonly used in roofing. Basecoats and primers based on EPS® 2252 offer outstanding adhesion to new thermoplastic olefin (TPO) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber. EPS® 2252 provides the capability to formulate coatings at <50g/L VOC.

Formulating Guidelines

  • Pigments: Careful selection of pigments is critical to many end-use properties, such as adhesion and water uptake. For optimal adhesion and water uptake performance, it is recommended that small particle size extenders be used, such as calcium carbonate. The PVC has also been shown to impact the adhesion to low energy substrates; highly filled systems may negatively impact adhesion and should be evaluated.

 

  • Dispersants & Surfactants: The use of and level of dispersants, surfactants and wetting aids may impact the adhesion performance properties of the roof coating. A ladder study is recommended to determine the optimum level.
